The Submarine (Sandwich) has Launched
This amazing sub shop first launched during the early 60s in Jersey City, New Jersey. As a passion venture by high school buddies (Angelo Baldassare, Tony Conza, and Peter DeCarlo), the shop was actually inspired by similar restaurants such as Mike’s Submarines (which was famous in that city).
Trying to stand out from other sandwich joints, the founders wanted to coin their wares differently (since they didn’t want to settle with the “subs” lingo for their sandwiches). Conza originally wanted to use the term “hoagies”, but local residents found it confusing.
After doing some research, the team decided to go for the word “Blimp”, since they felt it does sound and look like their sandwiches.
Lo and behold – it was a hit! So much so, people even started to ask if the brand’s open for franchise opportunities.
Not Exactly Smooth Sailing, But Still a Success, Nonetheless!
To state it briefly, the brand actually expanded – but several difficulties have been faced.
If basing it chronologically, Blimpie is actually the first brand to popularize submarine sandwiches. However, because of misaligned business decisions and efforts, their main competitor, Subway, took the lead (and prestige) of being and having the best recall as the premier submarine sandwich brand.
Subway actually was founded a year after Blimpie – a wasted opportunity if this would mean in getting the top spot as the go-to brand for submarine sandwiches.
Even with the derailment, management made ways to pivot and make up for the lost opportunity. Seeing the impressive and profitable market that Subway has its hands on, Blimpie made several changes to get into the game. By addressing store-level issues (improving employee skills and morale, listing clearer and attainable goals, amongst others), Blimpie slowly got back on track in making a mark in the submarine sandwich industry.

Sure enough, and after much work and changes, the brand remains to be a force in the food industry. The drive to excel (even if a great opportunity had been lost) offers Blimpie staff to always provide great service and food.
